Production Designer, Journey Group

My name is Brittany Fyne. And I am a graphic designer at Journey Group here in Charlottesville, Virginia. And I'm also a freelance photographer and painter and illustrator. And those are three things, bleed into my work at Journey as well. So we get hired out by other institutions and organizations to do the design work that they need. A lot of our work is editorial based. And that means like, online publications or magazines, catalogs. We also design all of the postage stamps the United States Postal Service comes out with. We work in a lot for UVA. So a lot of annual reports, magazines. We also work with other universities around the country and then a lot of our work is also for humanitarian organizations. So organizations like World Vision, who go out across the country and the world, to do humanitarian crisis relief. A lot of our work has constraints, which is a good thing, in terms of the story that our clients needed to tell. The format it needs to be in, the budget they have to produce it. The images that they have to work with or that they're willing to hire us out to do. And a lot of that content is a specific length that we need to fit into a specific amount of space. And so, a lot of that is the beginning, working with those clients, meeting with them about their needs and what they've got to work with. And then going from there, I mean often we will dream big with them and try to kind of challenge them to think in new ways. But in the end, it depends on what really needs to get the job done. So the bulk of my graphic design work, outside of work tends to be, things that are either for causes that I really care about and organizations I care about or they are things like note cards that I design and sell throughout Virginia. And then, apart from that, the bulk of my freelance work tends to be photography and illustration. I also do a lot of painting and show around Virginia and around the country.
