Position: Designer
Status: Exempt
Reports To: Design Manager
Job Summary: The Designer is to review the specifications and estimate of a project/job and design the necessary sprinkler system to meet the customer’s needs within the applicable code and regulations while not exceeding the estimated budget.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Reviews project information to include specifications, plans, addendums and letters prior to setting up the project/job.
- Acquire the necessary flow test information and block in building or acquire the CAD background if possible.
- Hydraulically calculate the system and layout the sprinkler system preparing the necessary plans for submittal.
- Submit Design Supervisor approved plans for approval by the Authority Having Jurisdiction and send a preliminary materials list to the purchasing department.
- Review any revisions that apply to the plans, make necessary changes notifying purchasing, shop and the Project Manager of all changes required.
- Performs on site survey in detail, coordinates with other trades as required and prepares any special instructions for installations as required.
- Continually seek methods of controlling and reducing costs.
- Submits final material lists with any revisions highlighted and final plans for installation in a timely manner.
- Maintain a cooperative working relationship with other departments.
- Complete and adhere to checklists as required to ensure that each project follows the proper process and to ensure that the opportunity to commit errors is reduced.
- Provides technical support to resolve design problems through the application of code requirements, calculations and overall review of the process.
- Prepare complete O & M manuals to include as built drawings as required and submit them for review and acceptance in a timely manner.
- Ensure that the proper documentation is compiled and the plans and files are archived.
- Respects the confidentiality of the company, customers, and personnel information.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent organizations skills and attention to detail.
- Good working knowledge with AutoCAD/SprinkCAD is helpful. (NavisWorks & BIM experience is a plus), Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
- Experience reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and construction documents such as blueprints.
- Must have the ability to use and understand simple arithmetic, geometric and algebraic equations.
- Demonstrates good judgement and tact in solving problems and difficult situations.
- Performing all duties in an independent manner with little supervision.
Education/Experience:
- High School GED.
- Construction background is helpful.
- NICET Level l certification or higher is helpful.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods.
- Must have sufficient mobility to navigate through the office and shop.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- This position will occasionally be required to bend or stoop.
