The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is seeking applications for candidates for the position of Engineer Trainee Transportation (ETT). When disaster strikes – whether it be a bridge collision or a natural calamity – NJDOT Operations is there, deploying cutting – edge solutions and rapid response strategies to keep New Jersey moving forward.
WORK SCHEDULE AND SALARY
Engineer Trainees are assigned a 40 – hour work week. Current starting salary is $64,261 and $66,739 after six months. Standard workweek is Monday through Friday, but some positions may require contractor work hours. Work experience within many of the units will qualify as approved Design Experience for the issuance of a New Jersey PE License.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) currently offers a telework pilot program, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work at your primary residence outside of your assigned DOT work location. This program does not supersede the “New Jersey First Act”, which requires newly hired NJDOT employees to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. New hires will not be eligible for the telework pilot program until they successfully complete their 4 – month working test period.
Regional Operations

Operations Support
The Division of Operations Support serves as the dynamic backbone of our NJDOT maintenance infrastructure initiatives, orchestrating every aspect of maintenance engineering planning and maintenance construction valued at over $300M per
year. From crafting contract plans and specifications, to analyzing bid pricing and consultant agreement, to managing statewide maintenance construction contracts, our team ensures that our projects keep New Jersey’s roadway, signs, bridge, tunnels, electrical assets, and drainage in a state of good repair. In addition, as support to our Regional Operations teams, we assist in design aspects for fast paced emergency repairs when needed, which includes bridge hits by over height trucks, sinkholes, landslides, and hurricane/storm – related damage. REQUIREMENTS
Degree: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
Note: Possession of a valid Professional Engineer’s License issued by the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
Note: An Engineer – In – Training (EIT) certification issued by the Division of Consumer Affairs, New Jersey Office of the Attorney General may be substituted for the above education requirement. Applicants must submit proof of the EIT certification and the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam results. The area of discipline indicated on the FE exam results (e.g., Civil, Electrical and Computers, Chemical, Industrial and Systems, Environmental, Mechanical, and Other Disciplines) must be appropriate to the position.
