Duties
The Duty Locations of these positions are:
Whiskeytown National Recreation Area: (Government Housing is Available)
Lassen Volcanic National Park: Mineral, CA (Government Housing may be Available)
The incumbent works in the maintenance, repair and stabilization of sites built of stone and mortar. Provides stone masonry, rough carpentry and mechanical skills as part of the preservation of historic and non-historic structures. The incumbent may also work on other preservation efforts at historic and non-historic structures using traditional dry and wet stacked stone masonry techniques. Prepares mortar and mixes with appropriate percentages of sand, soil and chemical additives. Incumbent works under the direction of higher graded project manager (and must display journeyman knowledge and skill requirements in the masonry trade). Incumbent will operate power hand tools such as saws and chainsaws.
Physical Effort: Performs heavy lifting up to 100 pounds, carrying stone, mortar, sand, soil, scaffolding, and other small equipment. Normally required to climb scaffolding to heights of from 5 to 25 feet; bend, stand, and kneel for long periods of time. Sometimes required to hike long distances and climb steep slopes.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed outside with exposure to all types of harsh weather conditions ranging from cold, windy, and snowy weather to hot dry conditions, often in direct sun for all or most of the day, and often in the company of insects, rodents, and reptiles. Some contact is necessary with chemical agents such as cleaning fluids and preservation compounds some of, which are considered hazardous. Assignments involve exposure to dust and dirt while mixing mortar.
