The Light-Duty Testing Section “A” is seeking an enthusiastic candidate to join a highly skilled and dedicated team of technical and professional staff to conduct emissions testing and research activities at CARB’s Southern California Headquarters facility. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team responsible for supporting the Agency’s vehicle testing programs in areas of certification, in-use compliance, regulatory development, enforcement, emissions inventory and research using five separate test cells for light- and medium-duty vehicles, highway motorcycles and off-highway recreational vehicles testing. Under general direction of the Air Resources Supervisor I, the Air Resources Engineer applies engineering knowledge, skills, and principles, to review, validate and interpret vehicle emission test plan and data; develop and adapt instrumentation and operation procedures for automotive engine and exhaust control device testing and evaluation; develop new testing procedures to evaluate automotive technologies; plan and carry out comprehensive automotive engineering studies and investigations; interpret and apply laws, rules and regulations pertaining to automotive testing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with automobile manufacturers, emission equipment suppliers, other governmental agencies, and emission research organizations; communicate effectively, analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Working Conditions
This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency’s discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards’ (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.
The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense.
