This internship is located in Chicago, IL or Washington D.C. This is a hybrid position with 3-4 days in-office.
As an intern, you will be part of the Policy and Advocacy Team and have the opportunity to see the inner workings of how executive orders, regulations and legislation impact insurers, which ultimately impacts everyone who is insured in our country. You will assist the team with research, drafting policy briefs, covering external events, analyzing regulations and legislation, helping develop new ideas to familiar policy topics and preparing presentations.
Primary Job Functions
- Ensure complete confidentiality of company business.
- Keep management informed about developments within areas of responsibility and handle special projects as needed.
- Create a final PowerPoint presentation to share with department leadership, summarizing the internship experience, the assigned project, results, and any recommendations for future use.
- Adhere to HIPAA, Diversity Principles, Corporate Integrity, Compliance Program policies, and other relevant corporate and departmental policies.
- Engage with the federal policymaking process by supporting a broad range of Policy issues, including but not limited to, affordability, mental health, health equity, prior authorization, drug pricing strategy, rural health, value-based care, preventive services and public health-related topics.
- Provide assistance with reviewing legislative and regulatory text to analyze and synthesize those proposals
- Assist with developing strategy on priority issues by conducting research and working with Plans to build consensus positions
- Research key policy recommendations from other stakeholders in the field to identify additional positions and areas of alignment with BCBSA’s positions
- Attend legislative and regulatory briefings, committee hearings/markups, political events on behalf of BCBSA, as appropriate. Provide reports back to Policy & Advocacy staff on salient information or intelligence gathered.
Education, Experience and Certification
Education
Required:
- Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Health or related fields.
- Graduation date between December 2025 – June 2026 (preferred)
- A minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Availability to work ten weeks during the summer
- Unrestricted authorization to work in the United States (Currently, we are not offering this position with a student visa including F1, OPT, CPT or H1B and are not accepting or sponsoring student work visas for this role)

- Proactive and eager to learn
- Strong computer skills. Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and SharePoint preferred.
