What you will do:
The primary responsibilities of the sales tax auditor include:
- research and identify audit candidates;
- audit businesses ranging in size from small local ownership to Fortune 500 companies;
- evaluate each audit candidate and determine the most effective means to conduct the audit;
- verify compliance with all sales, use, and excise tax laws;
- work with taxpayer representatives, including attorneys, accountants, bookkeepers, and other professional staff;
- present findings to taxpayers and explain tax laws, policies, and procedures;
- resolve any areas of concern found as a result of audits; and
- travel in and out of state 10-25% of the time.
This position also works closely with these stakeholders:
- revenue management;
- co-workers/peers/sales tax auditors;
- taxpayers/business owners;
- controllers / CPAs / accountants; and
- attorneys.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or economics, with prior work experience in the accounting field. The ideal candidate will be an effective communicator and have the ability to be decisive based on facts and training. Equally important will be a strong work ethic and interpersonal skills, discretion, confidentiality, and a positive attitude.
Knowledge of:
- generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) or the capability to become knowledgeable;
- generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS) or the capability to become knowledgeable;
- standards, concepts, and objectives of auditing financial records of all business types or the capability to become knowledgeable;
- Microsoft Office Suite.
Prior knowledge of South Dakota tax laws is not required. Training will be provided to the successful candidate.
