W.W. Norton & Company is seeking a College Permissions Assistant to support the department with clearing the necessary permission for copyrighted textual, illustrative, and audio content to be included in Norton’s college and high school textbooks and courseware. This position is also responsible for oversight of billing tasks associated with the permissions cleared by all members of this department. Candidates must have strong communication and research skills, be very organized and detail oriented, and proficient at multitasking. The ability to prioritize strategically, consistently meet deadlines, and work independently is also essential. The College Permissions Assistant reports to the College Permissions Manager.
Essential Job Responsibilities Include:
Permissions clearance:
- Requesting and obtaining permission for copyrighted material to appear in Norton’s college and high school textbooks and courseware.
- Negotiating fees and terms of permissions agreements with copyright holders of requested materials.
- Maintaining the College Permissions department’s tracking database with updated information on project status and contact information for copyright holders.
- Assisting other team members with data entry in our permissions tracking database.
- Regularly attending project status meetings and communicating permissions dependencies and concerns within the framework of the production schedule.
For Billing associated with the College Permissions department:
- Preparing and tracking check requests for all projects handled by the text permissions team.
- Monitoring the College Permissions email account and responding to payment inquiries.
- Archiving final files within our archival system.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Internship and/or employment experience in publishing is a plus, as well as knowledge of copyright law.
- Must be highly organized and detail-oriented
- Excellent organizational and written communication skills
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask across various projects with competing deadlines
- Must be self-motivated and able to work independently
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications, DocuSign, and Adobe Acrobat
- Employment eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required
- Must be able to work full business hours

- Annual compensation for this position is $45,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location, and like considerations.
