Under the general direction of the Medical Director, the psychiatrist provides psychiatric care to La Familia Medical Center (LFMC) patients, in accordance with federal, state, and other administrative requirements.

Various duties, responsibilities and accountabilities may be assigned to a psychiatrist in this position depending on the specific department job assignment, and may include but not be limited to the following:
Psychiatrist Duties
- Maintains psychiatric practice at LFMC as authorized by the psychiatric license and in accordance with the psychiatrist job description. Works in area of his/her specialized field in delivery of care to LFMC patients; demonstrates differential diagnosis capabilities, makes psychiatrist judgment and decisions based on history and physical exam observations on patients and formulates treatment plan in patient psychiatrist records. Evaluates outcomes and modifies treatment plan accordingly;
- Provides psychiatric care to patients meeting or exceeding psychiatric encounter treatment requirements, and quality of care standards established by LFMC and its grantor agencies;
- Diagnoses and treats illnesses in adults and/or children as authorized by their psychiatric license and in accordance with LFMC protocols;
- Consults with the Medical Director on the delivery of quality psychiatric care to patients;
- Participates in setting psychiatric and counseling standards and protocols for LFMC;
- Charts psychiatric encounters and refers patients for further diagnosis and treatment outside LFMC;
- Provides all documents, opinions, diagnoses, recommendations and other evidence and records necessary for the purpose of supporting fees charged for the services provided. Promptly executes such documents to facilitate prompt billing and collection of said professional services;
- Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed psychiatric conditions;
- Refers patients to specialists and to relevant patient care components as appropriate;
- Works with other providers and counseling staff to provide a team approach to psychiatric care;
- Initiates and/or participates in community organizations to provide resources in psychiatric care;
- Provides counseling to parents and/or children, focusing on preventive psychiatric care;
- Follows established LFMC departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards; and medical policy and operations protocols; collaborates with Medical Director and other primary care providers to revise and update psychiatric protocols to ensure that they are current and accurate;
- Performs other duties as stated in psychiatrist contract with LFMC.
Education and Experience
- This position requires that the physician be a graduate of an approved medical school and have completed a residency program in one of the primary care specialties;
- Preferred experience in a community health center, and working within a managed care environment.
Licenses and Certifications
- Documentation of education, experience and licensure is required and must be maintained; physician must be insurable under the policies and requirements of LFMC;
- Current licensure for the State of New Mexico is required;
- Board certified or board–eligible in specified area of medical specialty; board certification in Family Practice is recommended;
- Federal DEA Certification;
- NM State pharmacy license;
- ACLS or CPR and First Aid certification;
- Must be credentialed per LFMC procedures.
